The Amazon is the world\u2019s largest source of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/what_we_do\/where_we_work\/amazon\/about_the_amazon\/\">biodiversity<\/a>\u00a0and one of the most determinant factors of the health of the planet. The quality of Earth\u2019s air depends on the vegetation of the Amazon rainforest, and with alarming trends of deforestation, water pollution, and resource extraction, it is more threatened than ever.\u00a0 Initiatives that have come out of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/policies\/international\/negotiations\/paris\/index_en.htm\">Paris Summit<\/a>\u00a0to regenerate forests and cut carbon emissions lead the way toward a global solution to maintaining the precious resources in the Amazon. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iadb.org\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2015-12-01\/idb-supports-launch-of-sustainable-colombia-initiative,11342.html\">Sustainable Colombia Initiative<\/a>\u00a0sets an example for countries in the region to systematically address rural development and reforestation efforts in the Amazon in adherence to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.efe.com\/efe\/english\/technology\/colombia-expects-an-ambitious-binding-agreement-at-paris-climate-summit\/50000267-2773566\">global commitments<\/a>\u00a0agreed upon in Paris.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Chihuahuan Desert, Mexico and the United States \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>The Chihuahuan Desert is the largest in North America spanning both Mexico and the United States, thus, the challenges posed by climate change are coordinated between both countries. In Mexico, the Chihuahuan Desert is one of the most vulnerable areas to maintain because of the scarcity of water needed to support more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/magazine\/issues\/fall-2015\/articles\/climate-change-on-the-rio-grande\">1,000 endemic species<\/a>, as well as farmers and livestock on both sides of the border. A binational\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/row\/R43312.pdf\">treaty signed in 1944<\/a>\u00a0has been the solution to buffering the desert from extreme draughts and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/places\/chihuahuan-desert\">managing its shared water resources<\/a>\u00a0according to the natural watershed of the Chihuahuan Desert which encompasses seven states across two nations. Continuing this cross-border partnership to combat the intensifying effects of climate change is the best solution to preserving the desert\u2019s biodiversity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Lake Enriquillo, Dominican Republic \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0The largest lake (375\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kil%C3%B3metro_cuadrado\">km\u00b2<\/a>) in the Caribbean has been expanding at a rate of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cctv-america.com\/2015\/12\/04\/water-levels-at-lake-enriquillo-in-dominican-republic-rising-inexplicably\">1 meter per year<\/a>\u00a0over the last decade, destroying farmlands and homes of some of the most vulnerable people and wildlife in the Dominican Republic. Researchers say the lake has doubled due to heavy rains and is now the size of Atlanta, an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/01\/12\/world\/americas\/rising-tide-is-a-mystery-that-sinks-island-hopes.html?_r=1\">unprecedented global phenomenon<\/a>. \u00a0Scientists suggest that climate change is the root cause behind the rising water, although they have yet to discover the precise reasons.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the most recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nca2014.globalchange.gov\/report\/regions\/southeast\">S. National Climate Assessment<\/a>\u00a0forecasts more extreme weather patterns in the Caribbean with fewer, but more intense tropical storms.\u00a0In an attempt to slow the impacts of climate change, Dominican Republic has invested\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dominicantoday.com\/dr\/tourism\/2014\/4\/23\/51248\/New-Dominican-Republic-town-rises-from-salt-lakes-spreading-waters\">$24M<\/a>\u00a0to launch a one-of-a-kind green cities project to create a sustainable living community for the people who had once lived in what is now Lake Enriquillo.\u00a0 This new city is called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2016\/03\/160303-haiti-dominican-republic-lakes\/\">Nuevo Boca de Cach\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and is home to more than 560 families.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Machu Picchu, Peru-<\/strong>\u00a0The ancient Incan civilization in Machu Picchu, one of the most astounding\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2007\/07\/photogalleries\/seven-wonders\/\">wonders<\/a>\u00a0of the modern world, has been continually threatened by climate change and El Ni\u00f1o. Rising temperatures causing glaciers to melt have led to dangerous mudslides and flooding inside Machu Picchu.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.incaworldtravel.com\/eng\/news\/saving-the-inca-trail-machu-picchu-sanctuary-137\/\">Conservation efforts<\/a>\u00a0that the government and local tour operators are taking to educate visitors on how to best take care of this treasured site include sustainable tourism measures to reduce the use of plastic bags and batteries that create pernicious sources of waste.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0About the Author:\u00a0<\/strong>@geovannyvicentr<\/p>\n<p><em>Geovanny lives in Washington, D.C.
